Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Profitability And MarginsFirst BanCorp reports consistently high profitability and margin resilience, with YoY EPS growth and record adjusted pre-tax, pre-provision income. Durable margins and recurring operating leverage support steady internal capital generation and reinvestment capacity over the medium term.
Robust Capital Position And Shareholder ReturnsA CET1 ratio near 17% provides a strong regulatory and loss-absorbing buffer, enabling consistent capital returns via buybacks and dividends. That combination supports shareholder alignment while preserving balance sheet flexibility to absorb shocks and fund strategic initiatives over multiple quarters.
NIM Expansion From Securities ReinvestmentA sizable pool of low-yielding securities scheduled to mature creates a structural tailwind to net interest margin as proceeds are reinvested into materially higher-yielding instruments. Coupled with modest funding cost improvements, this supports sustainable NII growth over coming quarters.
Bears Say
Inconsistent Loan Growth / Minor ContractionLoan book expansion has been uneven, with seasonally driven and consumer/auto softness causing a small contraction. Persistent variability in core lending volumes constrains predictable NII growth and capital deployment, elevating risk to sustained asset growth pacing.
Sustained Expense Pressure From Tech/AI MigrationInvestment in cloud, data and AI is structurally positive but raises the operating expense base for ~1–2 years, pressuring efficiency ratios. Higher recurring technology and outsourcing costs can compress near-term operating leverage and require stronger revenue conversion to maintain margins.
Potential Dilution From New Omnibus Incentive PlanA large new equity incentive pool strengthens retention and alignment but increases the potential for share count dilution over time. Material future grants could erode tangible book per share and EPS growth, affecting long-term per-share economics if fully utilized.

Q1 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call communicated multiple clear positives: record adjusted pre-tax pre-provision income, expanded NIM, strong ROA and capital ratios, meaningful share repurchases/dividends, and notable improvements in delinquency and nonperforming assets. Offsetting items included modest loan contraction driven by softer consumer/auto demand, a slightly lower allowance for credit losses with added qualitative reserve for geopolitical risk, a small uptick in net charge-offs, and continued near-term expense pressure from cloud/AI and outsourced tech investments. On balance, the strength in core operating performance, capital returns, credit trends, and cited margin tailwinds outweigh the headwinds.View all FBP earnings summariesFBP Stock 12 Month Forecast
