Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Cash GenerationConsistently high free cash flow (~$9.7B, ~94% of net income) underpins durable internal funding for operations, capital returns, and strategic investments. Reliable FCF improves financial flexibility and lowers dependence on external financing over the medium term.
High Profitability ReboundA material rebound in margins (net ~33%, EBIT ~45%) and strong TTM revenue growth signal improved earnings power and operational leverage. Higher sustained profitability enhances cushion against rate cycles and supports investment in products and advisor platforms.
Improved Leverage And Balance-sheet ScaleLowered debt-to-equity and very large asset base reflect a materially stronger capital position and scale. Improved leverage reduces refinancing and liquidity risk, while balance-sheet scale supports client deposits, custody services, and competitive product offerings.
Bears Say
Historical Volatility In Cash And MarginsMeaningful swings in margins, leverage and operating cash flow across years weaken predictability of earnings and capital planning. This uneven cash conversion increases execution risk for buybacks/dividends and complicates stress planning under adverse markets.
Ongoing Capital Markets FundingFrequent large senior note issuances indicate continued reliance on capital markets to fund liquidity and strategic needs. Additional fixed obligations increase interest expense sensitivity and create refinancing and market-access dependencies over the medium term.
Governance Status Quo / Classified BoardRetention of a classified board maintains longer director terms and can slow governance or accountability changes. Reduced shareholder influence on board turnover may impede timely oversight of strategy, succession and executive alignment with investor interests.
