Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Sustained Operating Income GrowthSeven consecutive quarters of adjusted operating income growth signal improving underlying operations and execution across businesses. This persistent improvement supports durable earnings power by showing management can expand core operating profits even as GAAP items fluctuate, strengthening long-term cash generation potential.
Annuities Mix And Account GrowthGrowth in RILA and fixed annuity balances and a shift toward spread-based products diversifies revenue toward more stable fee and spread economics. A larger spread-based annuity base and rising fixed annuity sales reduce reliance on volatile traditional VA guarantees, supporting more predictable long-term margin and fee income.
Strong Capital And Liquidity MetricsConsistently high RBC and target leverage at 25%, plus meaningful holding company liquidity, provide regulatory cushion and financial flexibility. This capital strength supports ongoing product underwriting, strategic investments, and the ability to absorb market shocks without forced asset sales, improving long-term solvency resilience.
Bears Say
Inconsistent Cash GenerationSharp swings in operating cash flow across recent years highlight inconsistent cash conversion of reported earnings. Unpredictable cash generation limits capacity to fund capital returns, absorb stress, or self-fund strategic initiatives without tapping capital markets, raising a persistent execution and liquidity risk over time.
Large Variable Annuity OutflowsSustained VA outflows erode fee-bearing account balances and compress spread income, forcing reinvestment at current yields and increasing hedging and liquidity demands. Persistently elevated outflows would structurally reduce recurring fee and spread revenue and raise volatility in long-term earnings.
Elevated Disability Loss RatioA materially higher disability loss ratio reflects adverse underwriting and benefit trends tied to PFML rollouts and legacy LTD issues. If higher incidence or severity persists, margins in group protection face structural pressure requiring pricing, reserving, or product changes that could weigh on medium-term profitability.

LNC Earnings Call
Q1 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call communicated a clear net-positive operational and capital story: adjusted operating income growth (16% YoY), diversified and improving business mix (notably in Group Protection, Life, FIAs and spread-based annuities), strong alternative investment returns, and solid capital and liquidity metrics (RBC >420%, leverage at 25%, holding company liquidity ~ $805M net). Near-term challenges include a GAAP net loss driven by market-related items, sizable variable annuity outflows, a higher disability loss ratio (PFML and LTD resolution impacts), a one-time tax true-up and some sequential pressure in annuity balances/fee income. Management framed these headwinds as manageable and largely expected within their strategic transition. Overall, positive execution and financial flexibility outweigh the near-term operational and market-driven headwinds.View all LNC earnings summariesLNC Stock 12 Month Forecast
