Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Scale And Balance-sheet StrengthVery large franchise and expanding balance-sheet scale create durable advantages: broad deposit gathering, diversified loan mix, and greater ability to underwrite large corporate and government business. Scale supports fee cross‑sell, lowers unit funding costs and sustains competitive positioning over months.
Robust Retail Liability FranchiseA deep retail deposit base and growing savings balances provide stable, low-cost funding that supports net interest margin and loan growth. Persistent retail liabilities reduce reliance on volatile wholesale funding and improve funding mix resilience across business cycles.
Improving Asset Quality And Capital CoverageSustained lower NPA ratios and higher provisioning coverage strengthen loss-absorbing capacity and allow management to expand lending with less immediate capital strain. This structurally supports ROE stability and reduces probability of sharp credit-cost shocks over the medium term.
Bears Say
Meaningful And Rising LeverageA higher and rising debt-to-equity profile increases sensitivity to funding cost shifts and market funding availability. Over 2–6 months, higher leverage can compress margins and constrain capital flexibility if credit costs or rates move, limiting strategic options in adverse scenarios.
Uneven Cash-flow GenerationVolatile operating and free cash flows undermine predictability of internal funding for growth, provisions and investments. Such variability complicates capital allocation, increases reliance on market funding in weak years, and weakens confidence in sustained earnings quality over coming quarters.
ECL Uncertainty And Rising Fresh SlippagesEarly-stage stress upticks and an unresolved shift to ECL accounting create a structural risk to credit-cost run-rates and capital requirements. If models raise provisions or slippages persist, the bank could face sustained higher credit costs and one-time capital impacts when transition outcomes are finalized.
