Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Improved Leverage / Balance SheetMaterial de-leveraging and equity growth strengthen capital structure, increasing financial flexibility to fund originations, absorb losses, and support dividends. A lower leverage ratio reduces refinancing and covenant risk and gives management room to pursue selective investments.
High Portfolio Credit QualityHigh first-lien mix and very low nonaccruals provide structural loss protection and support stable interest income. Low LTVs in key sectors (software) reduce recovery risk, improving long-term portfolio resilience and reliability of distributable earnings.
Strong Liquidity & Active FundingRobust cash, available credit and demonstrated access to markets lower funding risk and allow opportunistic originations. Active liability management (note add-ons, LOC accordion, ATM raises) supports execution of the firm’s growth strategy without forcing distressed asset sales.
Bears Say
Operating Cash Flow DeteriorationA sharp cash-flow reversal signals potential timing or earnings-quality issues: if persistent, cash burn could pressure dividend sustainability and require incremental borrowing or equity issuance. It raises risk that reported profits may not convert to durable distributable cash.
Yield Compression & NII Per-Share PressureDeclining portfolio yields alongside rising expenses compress distributable income per share. For a yield-driven BDC, structural margin pressure reduces long-term ability to grow or sustain supplemental dividends and could force tighter underwriting or higher risk-taking to restore NII.
Operating Metric Transparency IssuesGaps in reported operating metrics reduce visibility into core performance and make it harder to assess recurring profitability trends. Persistent reporting inconsistencies raise concerns about earnings quality and complicate long-term forecasting and investor assessment of margin sustainability.
