Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Cash GenerationNCDL has generated consistently positive operating cash flow and strong cash conversion (free cash flow equals operating cash flow historically). This durable cash generation underpins the company’s ability to cover distributions, fund reinvestment, and absorb temporary mark-to-market volatility without immediate liquidity strain.
Senior‑secured, Diversified PortfolioA portfolio concentrated in first‑lien senior loans and broadly diversified across hundreds of middle‑market companies materially reduces single‑name and structural loss risk. This senior‑secured bias and low concentration support steadier interest income and lower long‑term loss severity versus subordinated strategies.
Balance Sheet & JV ExpansionManagement has actively optimized funding (CLO redemption, 2030 note tap at stable cost) and seeded an unconsolidated JV to scale first‑lien lending off‑balance sheet. These durable actions diversify funding sources, preserve liquidity, and create an accretive channel to grow earning assets without materially increasing core BDC leverage.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageNCDL operates with meaningful leverage typical of lending BDCs; current gross/net debt-to-equity near the upper target range amplifies NAV and earnings sensitivity to credit losses or rate moves. Elevated leverage limits flexibility and raises the bar for asset performance to sustain distributions through stress periods.
Rising Credit StressIncreases in nonaccruals, watch‑list exposure and Q2 realized/unrealized losses indicate emerging asset‑quality pressure. Credit deterioration can be persistent in private credit, eroding NAV and constraining distributable earnings over multiple quarters as write‑downs and workout timelines crystallize.
Muted Deployment At NCDLA sharp intentional slowdown in originations and fundings at the NCDL vehicle reduces near‑term growth of yield‑earning assets. Even if tactical, sustained lower deployment limits net investment income expansion and delays NAV recovery from prior mark‑to‑market declines, pressuring medium‑term earnings momentum.

Company Description
Nuveen Churchill Direct Lending Corp.
Nuveen Churchill Direct Lending Corp. (NCDL), initially formed as a Delaware limited liability company on March 13, 2018, and subsequently restructured into a Maryland corporation on June 18, 2019, prior to commencing its business activities, operates as a closed-end, externally managed, non-diversified investment company. It has chosen to be regulated as a Business Development Company (BDC) under the Investment Company Act of 1940, as amended. The firm's principal investment goal is to generate appealing risk-adjusted returns, primarily through current income. This is achieved by predominantly investing in senior secured loans provided to private equity-backed U.S. middle market companies, which NCDL identifies as enterprises with annual earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) generally ranging from $10.0 million to $100.0 million. Its portfolio will largely comprise what it refers to as "Senior Loans," primarily consisting of privately originated first-lien senior secured debt and unitranche loans (excluding "last-out" positions) to these performing U.S. middle market businesses. Additionally, the company selectively pursues "Junior Capital Investments," which include instruments such as second-lien loans, subordinated debt, last-out unitranche loan positions, and various equity-related securities.

NCDL Earnings Call
Q2 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call presented a mixed but generally stable picture: operating performance remained resilient with net investment income covering the base dividend, distribution continuity, strong platform-level deal activity, conservative portfolio construction and proactive capital-structure actions (CLO redemption, unsecured note tap, maintained cost of debt and ratings). Offsetting these positives were meaningful declines in NCDL's quarterly originations and fundings, a modest NAV and portfolio fair value decline, realized/unrealized losses that weighed on GAAP earnings, and a rise in nonaccruals and the watch list. Management characterized several adverse items as idiosyncratic and emphasized the strength of the Churchill platform and the accretive JV, but near-term deployment activity at NCDL was muted.View all NCDL earnings summariesNCDL Stock 12 Month Forecast
