Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Reserves & Resource BaseA multi-billion-barrel reserve and resource base with a 14.2-year 2P life underpins long-term production optionality and project economics. This scale supports multi-year LNG and liquids contracts, reduces exploration risk and enables sustained cash generation across cycles.
Operational Delivery & ProductionConsistently high production and platform reliability (e.g., Sangomar near 99%) demonstrate operational strength. Stable output increases predictable cash flow, supports contractual supply commitments, and validates execution capability for new developments and phased expansions.
Balance Sheet Liquidity & GearingHealthy liquidity and conservative gearing provide funding flexibility for large projects and distributions. A strong cash buffer and target-range leverage reduce refinancing risk, enable partner de‑risking strategies and support credit metrics while the company executes capital‑intensive growth.
Bears Say
Free Cash Flow VolatilityNegative free cash flow in 2025 despite strong operating cash flow highlights cash conversion sensitivity to capex and price cycles. Persistent FCF volatility constrains discretionary returns, elevates reliance on asset sales or partner funding, and complicates long-term dividend predictability.
High Near‑term Capex & Transition-year RiskA capital‑intensive transition (turnarounds, tie‑ins, multi‑project build) raises funding needs and execution risk. Elevated near‑term capex can suppress production, pressure free cash flow and increase the need for partner sell‑downs or external financing during a prolonged ramp‑up period.
Tax & Decommissioning UncertaintyRising and uncertain petroleum resource rent tax liabilities plus large decommissioning obligations introduce structural cost variability. These items can materially affect NPAT and cash available for investment or dividends and require conservative capital allocation and higher provisioning over the medium term.

The call presented a strong operational and financial performance in 2025 with multiple high‑impact project milestones (record production, Scarborough 94% complete, Louisiana LNG FID and partner sell‑downs), robust balance sheet metrics and achievement of sustainability targets. Near‑term challenges were acknowledged — a capital‑intensive transition year (Pluto turnaround, dry docks), tax (PRRT) and production timing uncertainty (Sangomar decline), decommissioning spend and some margin volatility in marketing. On balance, the company emphasised disciplined capital management, liquidity and partner‑led de‑risking which materially mitigate execution and funding risks.View all WDS earnings summaries
