Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Reserve Base & Project PipelineA large, multi‑year reserve inventory and contingent resources provide structural support for production, FIDs and long‑term cash generation. This underpins capacity to fund projects, sustain dividends and pursue phased development (Scarborough, Trion, Louisiana) across commodity cycles.
Low Operating Cost And Strong Production ScaleSustained low unit costs and a sub‑$34/bbl cash breakeven materially increases margin resilience through price cycles. Combined with record 198.8mm boe output, scale improves fixed cost absorption and supports durable cashflow generation versus higher‑cost peers.
Strong Liquidity And Conservative GearingAmple liquidity and target‑level gearing provide financial flexibility to fund large capex, absorb timing shocks, maintain investment‑grade metrics and continue distributions. This balance sheet position reduces refinancing and covenant risk during multi‑year project build‑outs.
Bears Say
Free Cash Flow VolatilityA swing to negative free cash flow despite strong operating cashflow signals heavy investment and weaker cash conversion. Persistent FCF volatility limits discretionary capital (buybacks/dividends), raises funding needs for growth, and makes multi‑year payout visibility more uncertain.
High Near‑term Capital IntensityLarge, multi‑year capex commitments materially absorb cash and lengthen payback horizons. Even with partner sell‑downs, execution complexity and sustained investment reduce free cash flow and raise the risk that delays or cost overruns impair returns and dividend capacity.
Fiscal And Decommissioning UncertaintyRising PRRT exposure and material decommissioning spend ($500–$800m guidance) increase structural outflows and complicate forward earnings models. Legislative or tax changes can alter long‑term cash tax rates, reducing predictability of net returns and shareholder distributions.

The call presented a strong operational and financial performance in 2025 with multiple high‑impact project milestones (record production, Scarborough 94% complete, Louisiana LNG FID and partner sell‑downs), robust balance sheet metrics and achievement of sustainability targets. Near‑term challenges were acknowledged — a capital‑intensive transition year (Pluto turnaround, dry docks), tax (PRRT) and production timing uncertainty (Sangomar decline), decommissioning spend and some margin volatility in marketing. On balance, the company emphasised disciplined capital management, liquidity and partner‑led de‑risking which materially mitigate execution and funding risks.View all WDS earnings summaries
