Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Contracted LNG VolumesHigh contracted LNG coverage (≈75% of 2026–28 volumes) provides durable revenue and cashflow visibility through the near term. This reduces short‑term price exposure, supports project financing and underwriting of long‑lead capex, and underpins dividend and offtake planning across execution cycles.
Balance Sheet Strength & LiquidityGearing inside the 10–20% target range and ~$9.3bn liquidity provide financial flexibility to fund sanctioned growth while maintaining investment‑grade metrics. This capitalization supports partner de‑risking, funds near‑term capex, and cushions dividend policy through downcycles or project timing slippage.
Project Execution & ProductionHigh execution momentum — Scarborough near completion and record annual production — demonstrates operational capability and delivery discipline. Reliable execution translates into sustained production volumes, steady cash generation potential and lower execution risk for future phases and sanctioned projects.
Bears Say
Multi‑year Revenue DeclineConsecutive top‑line declines over 2023–2025 signal a weaker revenue base versus the prior cycle. Structurally lower revenue constrains margin expansion, reduces reinvestment capacity and makes returns more dependent on volatile commodity prices and new project ramp‑ups to restore prior earnings levels.
Volatile Cash GenerationA swing to negative free cash flow in 2025 despite strong operating cash generation highlights capex and timing pressures. Persistent FCF volatility raises risk to discretionary returns, increases reliance on partner funding or debt for growth, and complicates long‑term dividend planning.
Tax & Regulatory UncertaintyAnticipated PRRT step‑up and recent legislative changes create modelling uncertainty for NPAT and distributable cash as new projects ramp. Structural tax exposure can materially change post‑tax project economics, complicate capital allocation and may reduce sustainable shareholder returns if higher than modelled.

The call presented a strong operational and financial performance in 2025 with multiple high‑impact project milestones (record production, Scarborough 94% complete, Louisiana LNG FID and partner sell‑downs), robust balance sheet metrics and achievement of sustainability targets. Near‑term challenges were acknowledged — a capital‑intensive transition year (Pluto turnaround, dry docks), tax (PRRT) and production timing uncertainty (Sangomar decline), decommissioning spend and some margin volatility in marketing. On balance, the company emphasised disciplined capital management, liquidity and partner‑led de‑risking which materially mitigate execution and funding risks.View all WDS earnings summaries
