Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Profitability & CapitalRBC's high ROE (~17.6%) and CET1 ratio (13.7%) indicate durable profitability and a meaningful capital buffer. This supports organic growth, buybacks and dividend policy while meeting regulatory requirements, enabling long‑term capital allocation without immediate capital-raising risk.
Diversified Fee Income & Asset GrowthStrong Wealth and Capital Markets performance, with rising AUA/AUM and record capital markets revenue, underpins recurring fee income. This diversification reduces reliance on net interest income, smoothing earnings across economic cycles and strengthening long-term revenue resilience.
Robust Free Cash Flow ConversionHigh free cash flow conversion (FCF near net income) provides durable financial flexibility to fund dividends, buybacks, and technology investments. Strong cash conversion supports capital returns and strategic spending without materially weakening the balance sheet.
Bears Say
Elevated Balance-sheet LeverageDespite recent improvement, historically high leverage increases sensitivity to interest rate shifts and credit losses. Operating cash flow relative to total debt remains low (~0.11), limiting buffer for large shocks and constraining long-term financial flexibility in stress scenarios.
Credit Stress Pockets & Higher ProvisionsRising impaired loans and episodic wholesale impairments point to concentrated credit weaknesses (personal, commercial, CRE and specific large borrowers). Elevated provisions can persist and drive earnings volatility, pressuring reserves and capital if trends continue.
Margin & Expense PressuresPPA roll-off, modest NIM headwinds, and rising compensation/expense and a higher effective tax rate compress net margins. Over the medium term, persistent expense and tax pressure can limit operating leverage gains and constrain incremental earnings power.

Q1 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented a strong set of financial results with multiple record outcomes—earnings, revenue, Wealth and Capital Markets performance—robust profitability (ROE ~17.6%), solid capital (CET1 13.7%) and active share buybacks. Growth in fee-based businesses and AUA/AUM expansion underpin durable revenue streams. Offsetting these positives were higher provisions in pockets of the wholesale and retail portfolios, a rise in gross impaired loans, a one-time-related drop in insurance income, modest margin headwinds from PPA roll-off, and continued regional housing and trade-related loan growth pressures. Management reiterated disciplined capital allocation, mid-single-digit NII guidance (ex-trading), mid-single-digit expense growth, and confidence in AI and other investments to drive future productivity. Overall, the positives (record results, strong capital and profitability, wealth and markets momentum, and buybacks) materially outweigh the contained credit and margin headwinds.View all TSE:RY earnings summariesRY Stock 12 Month Forecast
