Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Free Cash FlowConsistent, high free cash flow (FCF) is a durable strength: FCF near $6.0B and ~75% cash conversion of net income provides internal funding for dividends, debt reduction and heavy capex without full reliance on equity markets. That resilience cushions cyclical downturns and funds growth execution over the next 2–6 months and beyond.
Very High Operating MarginsExceptionally high margins reflect integrated mining, smelting and refining, allowing SCCO to capture value across the chain. Durable margin advantage improves cash generation per ton, supports shareholder returns and provides buffer against commodity-related cost inflation for several quarters to years.
Secured Project Funding And Tangible ProgressSuccessful long-dated bond issuance and 42% completion of Tía María materially reduce execution and financing risk for a major growth project. Reliable access to capital and visible project progress increase the probability of future production additions and support multi-year growth targets.
Bears Say
Commodity Price CyclicalitySCCO’s revenue, margins and cash generation remain highly correlated with copper and by-product prices. While current prices drive record metrics, price downturns can rapidly compress EBITDA and free cash flow, straining leverage and capital plans within a 2–6 month horizon and beyond.
Peru Ore-grade Driven Production DeclinesLower ore grades and recoveries in Peru reduced output and signal reserve and operational challenges. Declining grades raise unit costs and require incremental capital or higher mining intensity to sustain volumes, pressuring medium-term production guidance and margin sustainability if grades don’t stabilize.
Large Capex, Debt And Execution/regulatory RiskA $20.5B+ capex pipeline and sizable absolute debt raise execution and funding exposure. Multi-year projects can face delays, cost overruns or regulatory changes (Peru risks noted), which could erode margins, increase leverage and delay cash returns, affecting structural financial resilience.
