Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Profitability & Revenue GrowthDBS has delivered multi-year revenue expansion with net margins around 29–30% in recent years. That level of operating profitability generates sustained internal capital, supports mid‑teens ROE and gives the bank durable capacity to fund growth, capital buffers and selective returns over the next several quarters.
Deposit & CASA MomentumUpgraded deposit guidance and strong, broad‑based CASA inflows strengthen low‑cost funding over time. A larger CASA base materially supports funding stability and liquidity, enabling lending capacity, reducing reliance on wholesale funding and offering a durable buffer for NII and balance sheet resilience.
Wealth & Fee DiversificationRobust wealth revenue and strong net new money demonstrate diversified, recurring fee streams beyond interest income. A healthy wealth franchise and bancassurance mix reduces reliance on rate cycles, supports fee resilience and cross‑sell economics, improving earnings durability across market cycles.
Bears Say
Rising LeverageMaterial increase in leverage over 2024–2025 elevates financial risk and reduces capital flexibility. Higher debt levels make the bank more sensitive to credit stress or funding cost shocks, potentially constraining future capital returns and requiring more conservative provisioning or capital accretion over the medium term.
Margin Pressure From SORA DeclineA sustained SORA decline has produced tangible NIM compression and raised rate sensitivity as CASA share increased. Deployment of surplus deposits into low‑yield HQLA also dilutes margins. These dynamics are structural headwinds for core interest income until rate curves or repricing dynamics improve.
Volatile Operating Cash FlowAlthough free cash generally tracks earnings, material year‑to‑year swings in operating cash flow reduce predictability of cash generation. This volatility complicates reliable dividend or buyback plans and increases execution risk for organic growth or capital deployment over the next several quarters.
