Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Conservative Balance Sheet And LiquidityPeabody’s low and declining debt profile, plus access to nearly $500M cash and >$850M total liquidity, meaningfully reduces near-term refinancing risk. This durable financial flexibility supports capital allocation, dividend repurchases, and the ability to absorb operational setbacks without forcing distress sales or abrupt cutbacks.
Positive Cash GenerationTrailing-twelve-month operating and free cash flow remain positive, providing an ongoing internal funding source for operations and capital needs. Even though FCF has declined, persistent positive cash generation underpins the company’s ability to service obligations, pay a modest dividend, and fund strategic projects over the coming 2–6 months.
Segment Diversification And Strategic OptionalityPeabody benefits from diversified cash engines — seaborne thermal, seaborne metallurgical and U.S. thermal — and is pursuing optionality via a rare-earth pilot and new export routes. These initiatives can sustainably expand addressable markets, reduce logistics constraints, and create higher-margin opportunities over an 18–48 month horizon.
Bears Say
Weak And Cyclical ProfitabilityPeabody’s income statement shows negative operating profit and net loss, reflecting the inherent cyclicality of coal pricing and tight margins. Persistent low profitability reduces retained earnings, limits reinvestment capacity, and leaves the company exposed to commodity cycles that can depress earnings and cash flow for extended periods.
Centurion Ramp-up Delays Reducing Met VolumesMechanical and commissioning setbacks at Centurion materially lowered metallurgical output and increased per-ton costs. A roughly 1.0M ton shortfall and an ~$80M hit to results are structural in the near term—delaying expected margin contribution and pressuring segment cash flows until longwall production normalizes in H2 2026.
Logistics And Fuel Cost Exposure With Unpriced TonsRising diesel and freight costs are a durable margin headwind given the company’s heavy fuel usage and export logistics footprint. Coupled with meaningful unpriced seaborne thermal and higher-ash volumes, this exposes earnings to fuel, freight and spot-price swings, making margins and cash flow volatile across quarters.

Company Description
Peabody Energy (BTU)
Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and founded in 1883, Peabody Energy Corporation operates as a prominent global entity in the coal mining sector. Its vast operations encompass the United States, Australia, Japan, India, China, and several other countries across Asia and beyond. The company organizes its extensive activities into key divisions: Seaborne Thermal Mining, Seaborne Metallurgical Mining, Powder River Basin Mining, and other U.S. Thermal Mining segments. Peabody's core business involves the extraction, processing, and sale of various types of coal. This includes thermal coal, primarily supplied to electricity generation facilities, as well as bituminous and sub-bituminous coal. Additionally, it mines a range of metallurgical coals, such as hard, semi-hard, and semi-soft coking coal, alongside pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, which it delivers to industrial clients and steel manufacturers. As of the end of 2021, the corporation maintained interests in 17 coal mining sites situated in both the U.S. and Australia, possessing approximately 2.5 billion tons of validated and likely coal reserves. It also managed around 450,000 acres of surface land through a combination of ownership and lease agreements. Beyond its mining endeavors, Peabody also facilitates direct and brokered trading of coal and related freight contracts, and furnishes transportation services.
