Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Improving Profitability And EfficiencyStrong earnings growth, higher returns and positive operating leverage indicate improving underlying profitability. The efficiency gains and planned $250M of annualized savings can support more durable earnings expansion beyond a single quarter.
Diversified Wealth And Fee GrowthRapid growth in wealth earnings, assets and product sales strengthens BMO’s recurring fee base and reduces reliance on interest spreads. Its diversified banking, wealth and capital-markets model provides multiple avenues for sustained revenue generation.
Strong Capital And Funding FranchiseA strong CET1 position and continued deposit growth provide financial flexibility to absorb losses, fund loan expansion and return capital. The broad deposit franchise also supports stable funding and strengthens BMO’s competitive position.
Bears Say
Elevated Consumer Credit LossesRising insolvencies, unemployment and card delinquencies can keep credit costs elevated across the consumer book. Persistent losses would reduce earnings, weaken operating leverage and constrain the benefits of stronger revenue performance.
High Balance-Sheet LeverageElevated leverage limits financial flexibility and increases sensitivity to credit deterioration, funding conditions and capital requirements. Material debt volatility also makes the balance-sheet structure less consistent and reduces visibility into risk capacity.
Net Interest Margin SensitivityBMO’s large spread-based banking business remains exposed to deposit costs, liquidity holdings and loan mix. Continued margin pressure would restrain net interest income growth even if loan balances and fee income continue improving.

BMO Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented materially positive operating and capital trends: strong adjusted EPS growth (+40%), record PPPT and net income, large ROE and ROTCE improvements, positive operating leverage and clear segment-level momentum (Wealth, Capital Markets, U.S. Banking, Canadian P&C). Management is executing on optimization actions (asset sales, deposit mix changes), returning capital via buybacks and a dividend increase, and investing in digital/AI capabilities. Offsets include elevated PCL in unsecured consumer cards and some sequential NIM pressure from higher liquidity and mix shifts, plus ongoing economic/geopolitical uncertainty. On balance, the positives (earnings, returns, capital actions, diversified fee growth) significantly outweigh the headwinds, supporting a constructive outlook while acknowledging near-term credit and margin sensitivity.View all BMO earnings summariesBMO Stock 12 Month Forecast
