Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Consistent Revenue And Margin ExpansionSustained top‑line growth with simultaneous EBITDA margin expansion indicates durable pricing power and operational leverage. Combined organic volume/price growth and disciplined cost management support repeatable cash generation and resilient earnings over multiple quarters.
Solid Cash Generation And FCF GuidanceConsistent operating cashflow above net income and multi‑hundred‑million dollar FCF guidance underpin capital allocation flexibility. Reliable FCF supports maintenance capex, bolt‑on M&A, RNG investments, and shareholder returns even through cyclical swings.
Waste Disposal Growth And RNG ProgramRising landfill and special waste volumes plus an expanding RNG/landfill‑gas pipeline diversify and monetize disposal assets. Ownership of disposal capacity and renewable gas projects creates higher‑margin, long‑duration cash streams and lowers reliance on third‑party tipping.
Bears Say
Rising Leverage And Reduced FlexibilityHigher leverage increases interest and refinancing risk and constrains optionality for large capex or acquisitions. While returns on equity remain solid, elevated debt ratios reduce cushion against macro shocks and lengthen payback timelines for new investments.
Chiquita Canyon Remediation Cash DragA multi‑year landfill remediation with material near‑term cash outlays directly reduces available FCF and increases operational uncertainty. Even if controlled, the recurring cash drain limits reinvestment capacity and compresses free cash flow metrics for at least the current year.
Fuel Cost Volatility With Lagged Surcharge RecoverySignificant diesel price swings and partial hedging expose margins to commodity volatility because surcharge mechanics lag. Persistent fuel cost exposure can depress near‑term margins and cash flow, and repeated spikes could erode pricing elasticity or customer retention over time.

Company Description
Waste Connections
Waste Connections, Inc. is a prominent provider of comprehensive waste management services across the United States and Canada, specializing in the collection, transfer, disposal, and resource recovery of non-hazardous materials. The company offers collection services to a broad spectrum of clients, including residential households, commercial enterprises, municipalities, industrial facilities, and those within the exploration and production (E&P) sectors. Beyond primary collection, it operates landfill disposal sites and manages recycling programs that process various materials such as compost, cardboard, mixed paper, plastic containers, glass bottles, and both ferrous and aluminum metals. Its infrastructure incorporates numerous transfer stations, designed to compact or load waste for efficient transportation to landfills or dedicated treatment facilities via trucks, rail, or barges. Waste Connections further provides intermodal services, facilitating the rail haulage of cargo and solid waste containers throughout the Pacific Northwest region via its specialized network of intermodal facilities. A significant component of its specialized offerings encompasses E&P waste treatment, recovery, and disposal. This includes handling complex waste streams generated from oil and natural gas exploration and production activities, such as drilling and completion fluids, drill cuttings, flowback and produced water, contaminated soils requiring reclamation treatment, and materials resulting from spill clean-ups, reserve pit remediation, or pipeline ruptures. The company also extends equipment leasing options to its clientele. As of December 31, 2021, Waste Connections' extensive operational footprint included the ownership of 334 solid waste collection operations; 142 transfer stations; 61 municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills; 12 E&P waste landfills; 14 non-MSW landfills; 71 recycling operations; 4 intermodal operations; 23 E&P liquid waste injection wells; and 19 E&P waste treatment and oil recovery facilities. Additionally, the company actively managed an extra 53 transfer stations, 10 MSW landfills, and 2 intermodal operations. Established in 1997, Waste Connections, Inc. maintains its corporate headquarters in Woodbridge, Canada.

Q1 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call conveyed a predominantly positive operational and financial start to 2026: revenue, adjusted EBITDA and margin performance exceeded expectations, pricing retention and AI-driven tools materially improved retention and yield visibility, special waste and landfill tons grew, and the balance sheet and M&A pipeline remain strong. However, material near-term headwinds persist — notably a sharp diesel price spike with lagged surcharge recovery (impacting Q2), ongoing remediation and cash impact at Chiquita Canyon ($100–$150M in 2026), weather-driven volume weakness, and persistent C&D softness. Management provided mitigating actions (hedges, surcharges, AI benefits, and M&A discipline) and expects many headwinds to be largely insulated over time, which supports an overall constructive outlook.View all TSE:WCN earnings summariesWCN Revenue Breakdown
