Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Cash Generation & MarginsSCI converts earnings into cash reliably: operating cash flow covered net income at >1x (TTM) and net margin is ~14%. This durable cash generation supports reinvestment, debt servicing and shareholder returns through cycle, insulating operations from short shocks.
Preneed & Cemetery MomentumStrong preneed and cemetery growth is structurally positive: preneed sales lock future revenue/pricing, cemetery revenue and gross profit expanded with ~33% margins. These trends create predictable cash receipts and higher-margin mix that enhance long-term profitability.
Capital Returns & LiquidityA sizable $600M repurchase capacity plus a raised dividend signals disciplined capital allocation underpinned by liquidity (~$1.7B). Persistent buyback authorization and dividend increases reflect management confidence in free cash flow and provide a durable mechanism to enhance per-share economics.
Bears Say
High LeverageBalance sheet leverage is a meaningful constraint: debt-to-equity around 3.3 and net debt/EBITDA ~3.68x limit financial flexibility, increase interest-rate sensitivity and restrict strategic optionality (M&A, sustained buybacks) if margins or cash flow deteriorate.
Declining Funeral VolumesMid-single-digit declines in funeral volumes and a ~300bp margin hit reduce a historically core revenue stream. Lower volumes depress operating leverage and cash flow, and if sustained they force greater reliance on cemeteries/preneed or require cost cuts that could pressure service levels.
Governance / Oversight RiskRecent governance changes and a director failing to secure a majority raise investor scrutiny risk. Bylaw amendments that broaden board control could weaken shareholder protections and reduce accountability just as leverage and capital-return choices make oversight materially important.

SCI's physical footprint encompasses a vast network of funeral homes, cemeteries, and crematories, including numerous integrated locations that offer both funeral and cemetery services. Within its cemetery division, SCI facilitates the acquisition of interment rights for diverse preferences, such as traditional developed lots, lawn crypts, mausoleum spaces, and niches for cremated remains. They also provide cemetery-specific merchandise and services like memorial markers, bases, outer burial containers, floral placements, graveside services, and merchandise installation, often available through pre-need arrangements. SCI markets its services and products under several well-recognized brands, including Dignity Memorial, Neptune Society, and National Cremation Society. SCI Earnings Call
Q1 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented a resilient operational and financial picture driven by strong cemetery performance, robust preneed sales, solid cash flow, disciplined capital returns and a healthy balance sheet. These positives were tempered by a significant mid-single-digit decline in funeral volumes that materially reduced funeral revenues and gross profit in the quarter and persisted into April, causing near-term uncertainty and a wider earnings range. Management emphasized cost control, strategic initiatives (seminars, cremation/cemetery rollouts, insurance product integration) and confidence in a back-half recovery, and reaffirmed full-year guidance.View all SCI earnings summariesSCI Revenue Breakdown
