Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Improved Leverage And LiquidityThe materially improved capital structure versus 2021—lower leverage and a sizable asset base—reduces near-term refinancing pressure and raises resilience to cyclical margin troughs. This structural improvement supports continued operations, capex and a credible deleveraging path over coming quarters.
Sustained Cost-savings (RBI) ProgramDelivering multi-hundred-million-dollar run-rate savings is a durable operational lever that improves margin resiliency across cycles. As these savings scale to the $350M target, they structurally reduce operating breakeven, lower cash burn during weak spreads, and improve long-run free cash flow potential.
Renewable Diesel Production And SBR ContributionGrowing renewable diesel output diversifies PBF's product slate into higher‑value, policy‑driven markets and provides a recurring EBITDA contribution from its SBR equity stake. This structural exposure to renewable fuels supports long-term margin uplift and aligns with secular decarbonization demand trends.
Bears Say
Weak Cash Generation And Negative FCFPersistent negative free cash flow and weak operating cash relative to earnings indicate structural cash conversion issues. This elevates reliance on external funding, constrains capital allocation flexibility and leaves the company exposed if refining margins remain subdued or working capital volatility persists over the next several quarters.
Working-capital Volatility And Inventory Write-downsLarge inventory swings and a sizable LCM hit demonstrate structural exposure to rapid commodity price moves and regional basis changes. Such working-capital pressure can consume liquidity, amplify quarter-to-quarter cash volatility, and increase funding needs independent of operating profitability for several months.
Derivative Mark-to-market Losses And Earnings VolatilityLarge MTM swings from hedging create persistent earnings and balance-sheet volatility; unrealized losses may reverse but complicate short-term credit metrics and cash planning. Ongoing derivative exposure means this earnings volatility is a structural risk until hedging profiles or market conditions normalize.

PBF Earnings Call
Q1 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
Balanced. The call highlighted several operational and financial positives: the near-complete restart of Martinez, achievement of $230 million in RBI savings with a path to $350 million, $1.0 billion of insurance recoveries to date, renewable diesel production (~16.7k bpd) and solid liquidity with a plan to delever. Offsetting these strengths were a Q1 adjusted net loss of $0.88/sh, modest adjusted EBITDA ($68.7M), large derivative mark-to-market losses (> $200M, ~ $100M unrealized), a $313M LCM inventory charge, substantial working capital draw (~$340M) and lingering restart-related costs and uncertainties. Given the roughly balanced list of material positives and negatives, sentiment is neutral.View all PBF earnings summariesPBF Revenue Breakdown
