Margin Expansion and Improved Returns
Operating margin expanded 220 basis points to 20.2%, gross margin expanded 120 basis points to 39.1%, and ROIC improved 190 basis points to 13.5%, reflecting improved profitability and capital efficiency.
Optical Communications Momentum and Large Customer Deals
Optical Communications sales rose 36% year-over-year to $1.8 billion; segment net income increased 93% to $387 million. Company announced a multiyear up-to-$6 billion agreement with Meta and two additional large long-term agreements with hyperscalers, supporting strong enterprise and carrier demand (both up 36%).
Rapid Solar Sales Growth and Strategic Buildout
Solar sales increased 80% year-over-year to $370 million. Corning converted a prior minority polysilicon position into a materially larger business (described as nearly $1 billion in revenue activity), with polysilicon operations performing above the corporate 20% operating margin target. Corning also brought module manufacturing online and built the largest U.S. solar ingot/wafer facility in 18 months.
Cash Generation and Financial Position
Generated robust free cash flow of $188 million in the quarter; maintain a strong balance sheet with long debt tenor (average debt maturity ~20 years). Company reiterated commitment to returning excess cash via share buybacks and a strong dividend.
Material Progress on Springboard Plan
Since the Q4 2023 Springboard baseline, Corning grew sales 33%, EPS 79%, expanded operating margin by 390 basis points and ROIC by 470 basis points. Management plans an upgraded and extended Springboard through 2030 and will raise sales plans for Solar and Optical at the upcoming investor event.
Glass Innovations and Product Leadership
New Glass Innovations segment produced $1.4 billion in sales (up 1% YoY) and $324 million in net income (22.8% net income margin). Launched Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 and highlighted ongoing demand resilience for premium Gorilla Glass products.
