Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Steady Revenue Growth And Healthy MarginsMulti-year revenue expansion and durable operating margins (TTM net ~10%, EBITDA mid-20s) indicate persistent demand for inpatient rehab services and operating leverage. These margins and consistent growth support sustainable cash generation and reinvestment capacity across the next several quarters.
De-risked Capital Structure And Improved LiquidityMaterially reduced leverage and recent financing actions (new revolver and note refinancing) extend maturities and relax covenant pressure. Improved debt profile increases financial flexibility to fund development, tolerate cyclical swings, and pursue share repurchases or dividends without near-term refinancing risk.
Workforce Stability And Productivity InitiativesLower RN/therapist turnover and a meaningful decline in premium labor reduce staffing cost volatility and agency reliance. Combined with analytics and productivity initiatives, these durable improvements bolster margin sustainability and support scalable capacity additions in the company's development pipeline.
Bears Say
Weak TTM Free-cash-flow ConversionA sharp TTM decline in free cash flow versus net income signals weaker conversion, likely from higher capex or working-capital swings. Persistently lower FCF constrains funding for growth, buybacks or dividends and increases reliance on debt or equity if elevated investment needs persist.
Medicare Advantage Utilization VariabilityMA utilization and utilization-management actions create structural volume and mix uncertainty because MA plans influence referrals and approval rates. Given material MA penetration in many markets, durable swings in MA trends can meaningfully impact revenue per discharge and occupancy over multi-month horizons.
Capacity Constraints And Unit Closures Limiting GrowthHigh occupancy levels and targeted unit closures have capped same-store discharge growth and left little immediate headroom for incremental admissions. Until new beds, small-format hospitals, or JV capacity come online, these structural capacity limits will constrain organic growth and utilization gains.

Company Description
Encompass Health
Encompass Health Corporation delivers a range of post-acute healthcare services across the United States, offered both in dedicated facilities and directly within patients' homes. The company's operations are divided into two primary divisions: Inpatient Rehabilitation, and Home Health and Hospice. Its Inpatient Rehabilitation division specializes in providing focused recovery treatment, available on an inpatient or outpatient basis. This care is designed for individuals recuperating from significant health challenges such as strokes, neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary issues, brain and spinal cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations. The Home Health and Hospice segment primarily serves the Southeast and Texas regions. Within this segment, home health services encompass a variety of Medicare-certified care options for adult patients, including skilled nursing, medical social work, home health aide assistance, and various therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Hospice services, on the other hand, provide in-home comfort and support for terminally ill patients and their families. As of June 1, 2022, Encompass Health maintained a substantial network, managing 149 hospitals, 252 home health locations, and 99 hospice locations spread across 42 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. The company, which established its roots in 1983 and is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, was formerly known as HealthSouth Corporation until its name change to Encompass Health Corporation in January 2018.

EHC Earnings Call
Q1 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented multiple material operating and financial wins: double-digit EBITDA growth, revenue growth, improved clinical quality metrics, lower RN turnover, meaningful decline in premium labor, strong free cash flow and an expanded development pipeline. Offsetting these positives were manageable headwinds: short-term volume impact from unit closures (~85 bps), a one-time increase in bad debt tied to legacy claim write-offs, MA utilization variability, regulatory implementation risk and localized capacity constraints in high-demand markets. Management emphasized plans to address capacity via bed adds, de novos, joint ventures and small-format hospitals, and raised full-year guidance based on Q1 performance. Overall, positives materially outweighed the negatives.View all EHC earnings summariesEHC Stock 12 Month Forecast
