Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Margin SustainabilityHigh gross and operating margins in 2025 indicate durable underlying unit economics across supply and services. Strong margins provide a structural buffer against wholesale price swings and competitive pressure, supporting cash generation and strategic reinvestment even if volumes ebb.
Improved Balance SheetLeverage reduced versus prior stress periods and debt roughly equals equity in 2025, giving Centrica greater financial flexibility. A more manageable capital structure lowers refinancing risk and improves capacity to fund operations, capex, or M&A during medium-term cycles.
Free Cash Flow RecoveryPositive operating cash flow and a sharp rebound in free cash flow provide durable internal funding for investments, servicing debt and returning cash to shareholders. Improved FCF enhances resilience and reduces reliance on external financing across the 2-6 month horizon.
Bears Say
Revenue SoftnessDeclining revenue over successive years signals weakening top-line momentum and risks eroding scale benefits in retail and services. Persistent revenue softness reduces margin leverage and constrains long-term growth unless offset by new customer gains or higher pricing in regulated markets.
Earnings VolatilityA swing back to a net loss despite strong operating margins highlights earnings volatility tied to commodity, trading and non-operating items. Continued profit inconsistency hampers strategic planning, investor confidence and capacity to sustainably fund dividends or large investments.
Weaker Operating Cash Flow CushionAlthough FCF rebounded, operating cash flow has weakened from 2023 highs, reducing the company's short-term buffer. A thinner OCF cushion increases sensitivity to margin shocks or working capital swings and could force external funding or tighter capital allocation in stressed periods.
