What is Polkadot?
Polkadot
Founded by Robert Habermeier, Peter Czaban and Dr. Gavin Wood, this sharded multichain metaprotocol brings together a network of specialized blockchains, which makes these blockchains interoperable. Further, Polkadot can update itself without having to undertake a fork and its next direction is voted upon by its token holders.
Importantly, Polkadot offers scalability as multiple transactions can be processed on parachains. The Polkadot ecosystem allows apps and services to communicate across chains and users can create a blockchain in minutes with its substrate framework.
The DOT tokens serve three purposes: governance, staking and bonding (new parachains are added by bonding tokens).
