Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Cash GenerationAir Canada’s sizable trailing‑12‑month operating cash flow and positive free cash flow provide durable internal funding for operations, capex and some debt reduction. Robust absolute cash generation improves resilience across airline cycles and supports strategic investments over the next several months.
Normalized Profitability And ScaleThe company’s large revenue base and normalized post‑pandemic profitability indicate sustainable core operations and network scale. Steady top‑line size helps absorb fixed costs, supports route economics and underpins medium‑term margin recovery initiatives despite sector cyclicality.
Diversified Revenue StreamsAir Canada benefits from multiple revenue pillars—passenger fares, cargo, ancillary fees and the Aeroplan loyalty program—which reduce reliance on a single demand driver. Diversification improves revenue resilience, supports higher‑margin commercial opportunities and strengthens long‑term cash flow stability.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageBalance sheet leverage remains high, limiting financial flexibility and increasing refinancing and interest‑rate exposure. In a cyclical industry where demand shocks occur, elevated debt constrains capital allocation, raises default risk in downside scenarios and reduces room for strategic investments.
Thin Net Margins Vs Prior PeakNet margins have materially weakened from prior peaks, implying rising cost intensity or weaker unit economics. Narrow profitability leaves less buffer against fuel, labor or demand shocks and makes sustained earnings improvement more sensitive to operational execution and industry cost pressures.
Weak Cash Conversion & VolatilityA low ratio of free cash flow to net income and historical swings in operating cash flow mean reported earnings do not reliably convert to liquid cash. This undermines debt paydown capacity and recurring investment funding, making financial performance more vulnerable if revenue or working capital worsen.

Company Description
Air Canada
Air Canada functions as a full-service airline, providing an array of flights across Canada, over the U.S. border, and to various international destinations. The company delivers scheduled passenger services through its primary Air Canada brand, along with its Air Canada Vacations and Air Canada Rouge subsidiaries, serving domestic, Canada-U.S. transborder, and global routes from and to Canada. Additionally, it expands its network by utilizing capacity purchase agreements with other regional carriers. As of December 31, 2021, Air Canada maintained a significant fleet: its mainline operations comprised 175 aircraft (97 Boeing and Airbus narrow-body jets, and 78 Boeing and Airbus wide-body planes); the Air Canada Express division operated 123 aircraft (including 50 Mitsubishi regional jets, 48 De Havilland Dash-8 turboprops, and 25 Embraer 175s); and Air Canada Rouge employed 39 aircraft (specifically 14 Airbus A321s, 5 Airbus A320s, and 20 Airbus A319s). Beyond passenger transportation, the company also offers air cargo services on domestic, U.S. transborder, and international routes connecting Canada with markets in Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. Furthermore, Air Canada is involved in the creation, promotion, and sale of vacation travel packages to popular regions such as the Caribbean, Mexico, the United States, Europe, Central and South America, the South Pacific, Australia, and Asia. It also arranges cruise packages across North America, Europe, and the Caribbean, and manages travel loyalty programs. Established in 1937, Air Canada's corporate headquarters are situated in Saint-Laurent, Canada.

AC Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call highlighted robust top-line performance (record revenues +11% YoY), strong adjusted EBITDA ($719M) and exceptional balance sheet metrics (liquidity $8.9B, net leverage 1.7x), alongside strategic value realization via a $2.5B minority sale of Aeroplan that accelerates deleveraging and shareholder returns. Offsetting these positives are material near-term headwinds from fuel volatility (a $500M–$600M booking/fuel mismatch), higher operating costs (including $388M of excluded charges) and modest ASM growth, which pressure unit costs. On balance, the company demonstrated financial resilience and clear mitigation plans (fuel recapture expected to improve into Q4, sale-and-leaseback/SIB proceeds), so positives meaningfully outweigh the detractors.View all TSE:AC earnings summariesAC Stock 12 Month Forecast
