Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Free Cash Flow GenerationConsistently rising free cash flow (FCF $1.19B in 2025 and $1.42B TTM) signals durable cash conversion from operations. High FCF supports reinvestment, shareholder returns and buffer for cyclical downturns, improving long-term financial flexibility and capital allocation.
Margin Expansion And Profitability RecoveryMaterial margin improvement and stronger operating profitability reflect better project execution and pricing power. Sustained EBIT and net margin gains increase earnings resilience, improve cash flow generation, and enhance ability to fund capex and support returns over the medium term.
Improving Balance Sheet And Lower LeverageProgressively lower leverage and rising equity reduce refinancing and solvency risk. Improved balance sheet metrics enhance capacity to bid for larger projects, absorb cyclical shocks, and pursue renewables or IRM opportunities without immediate dependence on external financing.
Bears Say
Cyclical Earnings And Cash VolatilitySubsea 7 operates in a highly cyclical offshore industry where contract timing, commodity prices and project mix drive sharp swings. Historical profit and FCF collapses limit visibility and increase risk that recent improvements may reverse during industry downturns, affecting returns.
Sizable Absolute Debt ExposureAlthough leverage ratios improved, the company still carries nearly $1B of gross debt. In a severe offshore slowdown or project writedowns, interest and principal obligations could constrain cash available for capex, dividends or opportunistic investments.
Historical Cash Conversion SwingsVery low FCF in 2023 demonstrates project timing and working-capital dynamics can sharply compress cash conversion. Persistent variability in vessel utilization and milestone receipts makes free cash flow less predictable and complicates long-term planning and dividend sustainability.

Company Description
Subsea 7
Subsea 7 S.A. is a prominent provider of extensive offshore project solutions and specialized services for the evolving global energy industry. The company's core capabilities revolve around the comprehensive development of subsea fields, managing projects from initial design and engineering through procurement, fabrication, surveying, installation, and commissioning of seabed production facilities. Beyond deepwater operations, the company provides conventional shallow water services, including the fabrication, installation, extension, and refurbishment of both fixed and floating platforms and their associated pipelines, alongside essential hook-up services. Moreover, Subsea 7 plays a significant role in the renewable energy sector, performing heavy lifting and transportation for various structures, installing offshore wind turbine foundations and inter-array cables, and undertaking the decommissioning of redundant offshore facilities. The company also supplies remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and specialized tooling to support exploration and production activities, while offering expert engineering and advisory services to clients in the oil and gas, renewables, and utilities industries.
