Start of Saleable R2 Production
R2 production began in Normal, Illinois with initial employee deliveries; management calls R2 a mass-market, attractively priced 5-passenger SUV/crossover expected to broaden Rivian's addressable market.
Substantial R2 Cost Reductions Targeted
R2 bill of materials (BOM) is expected to be approximately 50% of the R1 platform and non-BOM cost of goods sold is expected to be reduced by more than 50% via design-for-manufacturing, large die castings, structural battery pack, a more efficient drive unit and electrical architecture consolidation.
Georgia Capacity Upsized and DOE Partnership
Initial Georgia plant Phase 1 capacity increased by 50% to 300,000 units (midsized platform); Rivian announced an up-to-$4.5 billion Department of Energy loan (approx. $4B principal + $0.5B capitalized interest) to finance the greenfield expansion.
Revenue and Production Momentum
Consolidated revenue for Q1 was approximately $1.4 billion, up 11% year-over-year; Rivian produced 10,236 vehicles and delivered 10,365 vehicles in the quarter (automotive revenue ~$908 million).
Software & Services Strong Growth
Software and Services revenue was $473 million in Q1, a 49% year-over-year increase, generating $181 million of gross profit; ~60% (~$282 million) of that revenue was attributable to the Volkswagen Group joint venture.
Strategic Funding and Liquidity
Rivian ended Q1 with approximately $4.8 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments; expects $2.55 billion of partner capital in 2026 (including $1.0B already received from Volkswagen) and total available liquidity and expected capital of nearly $8 billion.
Autonomy and Tech Progress
RAP1 (Rivian Autonomy Processor) development on track (800 TOPS per chip, two chips per vehicle); management expects to roll out point-to-point capabilities by year-end, to introduce Gen 3 sensor suite (including LiDAR) and to deploy Level 4 robotaxi capabilities with Uber starting in the 2028 timeframe.
One-Time Financial Benefit Recognized
Q1 included a $506 million gain in other income related to the Series A capital raise and the deconsolidation of Mind Robotics; Rivian now owns ~38% of Mind Robotics on a shares-outstanding basis.
