Occidental Petroleum: Hold Rating Amid Balanced Prospects and Strategic CautionWe reiterate our Neutral rating on OXY into its 3Q25 earnings. The OXYChem divestiture has been its most topical update, with net debt reduction the biggest positive. However, we viewed the transaction as dilutive and reducing the organic FCF uplift in 2026-27E. On Upstream, we see operational performance remaining strong in the Permian and GoA volumes having upside due to minimal hurricane impacts.

Occidental Petroleum (OXY) Receives a Rating Update from a Top AnalystWe rate Occidental Petroleum (OXY) shares Neutral due to the company's more levered balancesheet vs. peers, its lower long-term production growth rate vs. peers, its spending on DACcarbon-capture projects, which likely lose money near-term, and its plan to sell around $5bn inassets, which is likely dilutive.

Analysts Have Conflicting Sentiments on These Energy Companies: Chord Energy (NASDAQ: CHRD), Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) and Ovintiv (NYSE: OVV)We have pondered for the past few quarters what ‘else’ OXY could do to accelerate de-leveraging. Midstream (WES stake) and OXYChem were two we speculated upon but both posed a number of challenges. Considering the BRK ownership and relationship it is perhaps unsurprising that it was the ultimate counterparty. OXY divested a recurring revenue business in the midst of a growth program (Battleground capex) where an improving environment was expected to drive ~$460 million of YoY FCF growth in 2026 (just under half the incremental highlighted by the company earlier). Declaring victory on the $15 billion debt target clearly came at a price as we view the acquisition multiple as dilutive and chemicals provided something of an integration ballast to the portfolio if often overlooked by shareholders.

Occidental Petroleum's Strategic Moves: Enhancing Shareholder Value through Divestment and IntegrationWe believe Oxy could resume share repurchases in 2026, while remaining committed to a sustainable and growing dividend, and forecast the company to generate USD4.35bn of FCF (after dividends) in total over the next two years (2026-27e). At the current share price, Oxy could retire 99m shares or c10% of shares outstanding and still have plenty of runway to build cash ahead of plans to begin redeeming preferred equity in August 2029. Aligning O&G with Midstream. Oxy expects the OxyChem transaction to “catalyze returns from its significant oil and gas resource opportunity.” The company targets organic growth through 1) its existing assets and infrastructure, 2) improving cost efficiencies, and 3) advanced recovery and integrated technologies.

Occidental Petroleum: Hold Rating Amid Strategic Divestiture and Financial ChallengesWe expect the $9.75bn received for the asset is marginally below investor expectations, while OXY will receive $8bn of after-tax proceeds to be used for $6.5bn of debt retirement and $1.5bn of cash on the balance sheet. We view the sale as accretive to EV/EBITDAX, however, we find FCF yield (% of EV) unch in '27 following Battleground earnings growth. We also find the sale dilutive to per-share metrics as we expect OXY will repurchase 50% with post-dividend FCF.
