Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Gross Margin ImprovementAn improving gross margin signals better cost control or a more favorable product mix. If sustained, higher gross margins create structural room to invest in R&D or absorb operating costs, supporting a path toward profitability even while operating losses persist.
Free Cash Flow ImprovementA reduction in negative free cash flow, even from a negative base, reduces near-term external funding pressure. Continued improvement would lengthen the company’s runway, lowering refinancing frequency and giving management more flexibility to execute strategic R&D and commercialization steps.
Established WorkforceA near-300-person workforce indicates retained operational and scientific capacity, supporting ongoing R&D and regulatory work. Maintaining skilled staff is a durable asset for biotech firms, preserving institutional knowledge and the ability to advance pipelines over multiple quarters.
Bears Say
Persistent Net LossesOngoing net losses and continued cash burn are structural headwinds that erode equity and force repeated capital raises. Persistent unprofitability undermines long-term viability unless offset by clear progress toward commercial revenue or sustained margin expansion.
Declining RevenueConsecutive years of revenue decline indicate weakening top-line momentum and reduce leverage of fixed R&D and G&A spend. Without reversing revenue trends, the company faces tougher trade-offs between funding growth, preserving cash, and avoiding further dilution.
Heightened Balance-sheet LeverageA steep drop in equity and higher debt-to-equity increases refinancing and dilution risk. Elevated leverage reduces financial flexibility, raises funding costs, and can constrain the company’s ability to fund trials or commercialization without materially dilutive raises or costly borrowing.
