Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls Say
Improved Cash GenerationOperating cash flow rebounded to ¥6,145m and free cash flow turned positive with an OCF-to-net-income ratio of 8.05 and FCF-to-net-income of 0.90. This durable cash conversion supports reinvestment, dividend coverage and debt service, improving financial flexibility over the medium term.
Margin And Profitability RecoveryGross margin of 21.05% and a return to positive net margin (0.76%) alongside improved EBIT (2.06%) and EBITDA (5.58%) indicate structural operational improvements. Sustained margin recovery signals better cost control and pricing power, which underpin long-term earnings resilience if maintained.
Specialized B2B NicheHarima’s focus on rosin-derived specialty chemicals and formulations for inks, adhesives, coatings and electronics creates durable product differentiation and technical barriers. B2B relationships and tailored functional additives support repeat demand and higher switching costs versus commodity suppliers.
Bears Say
Rising LeverageA debt-to-equity ratio of 1.14 and a noted increase in leverage reduce financial flexibility and raise interest and refinancing risk. Higher leverage can constrain capital allocation and magnify earnings volatility in downturns, requiring careful debt management over the next several quarters.
Low Return On EquityROE of just 2.04% signals the company generates limited shareholder returns relative to equity capital. With ROE low despite a return to profitability, capital efficiency and allocation will need to improve to deliver meaningful long-term shareholder value.
Raw-material And End-market CyclicalityBusiness relies on rosin and petroleum/solvent-related inputs and serves cyclical end markets (packaging, paper, adhesives, electronics). Structural exposure to input-price swings and demand cyclicality can compress margins and revenue, requiring sustained pricing power or product mix shifts to mitigate risk.
