Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Improved Leverage And Capital BaseAirbus has materially reduced leverage versus 2021 while equity has grown, supporting a stronger capital base. Healthy recent ROE (~21% TTM) and improved leverage increase resilience to industry cyclicality and underpin funding for programs, R&D, and multi-year contracts.
Diversified Business And Recurring AftermarketAirbus’s diversification across commercial, defense, helicopters and space plus a global aftermarket creates recurring, less cyclical revenue. Services, spare parts and maintenance generate steady cash flows that smooth demand volatility tied to aircraft deliveries and support durable margins.
Multi-year Revenue And EPS Growth TrendRevenue and EPS growth over recent years reflect expanding deliveries, backlog conversion and improved operational leverage. Sustained multi-year top- and bottom-line growth supports scale advantages, supplier bargaining power, and the ability to invest in product development and customer support.
Bears Say
Weakened Cash Generation And FCF DropFree cash flow fell sharply in the trailing twelve months and covers only about one-third of net income versus ~50–60% historically. Lower cash conversion reduces flexibility for investment, program funding and debt servicing, raising structural liquidity risk if trend persists.
Margin Erosion And Recent Revenue SlowdownMargins have declined from 2021–2022 highs while TTM revenue growth turned sharply negative, indicating pressures from mix, pricing or cost inflation. Sustained margin erosion weakens earnings resilience and limits the company’s ability to self-fund growth or weather cycle downturns.
Sizable Absolute Debt Level RemainsAlthough leverage ratios improved, absolute indebtedness remains large. High nominal debt increases interest and refinancing exposure across cycles and constrains strategic flexibility, especially if cash generation stays weak or capital spending needs rise on key programs.
