iShares iBonds Oct 2036 Term TIPS ETF (IBIM) is a targeted, maturity-focused inflation-protection fund that holds U.S. Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS) maturing in the 2036 window. The ETF tracks a market value–weighted index of TIPS with final maturities between January and October 2036, offering investors direct exposure to Treasury-issued, inflation-linked principal and coupon payments concentrated in a single, long-term maturity cohort. Positioned in the Government, Inflation-Linked, Investment-Grade niche, IBIM combines the credit safety of U.S. Treasuries with CPI-linked principal adjustments that aim to preserve purchasing power. Because holdings are limited to a tight maturity range, the fund behaves like a single-maturity bond position: it delivers inflation-adjusted income and principal repayment tied to inflation through its life, and is designed to terminate in October 2036 when the underlying securities mature. IBIM is well suited to investors who want long-term inflation hedging tied to a known target date—useful for liability matching, target-date planning, or replacing a maturing slice of a bond ladder—while retaining intraday liquidity and diversification across multiple issued TIPS rather than a single security. Investors should be aware that, despite minimal credit risk, the fund’s long-term real-rate sensitivity can produce price volatility as real yields move; however, at maturity the inflation-adjusted principal is returned, and the fund will liquidate in October 2036.
