xAI CFO Mike Liberatore Departs after 3 Months as Musk’s Startup Seeks Capital

Elon Musk’s AI firm, xAI, has lost its Chief Financial Officer after just three months. Mike Liberatore, who joined the company in early 2025, stepped down in July. He had been involved in fundraising plans and the setup of new data centers in Memphis. According to reports, he has already secured a new job, although his next role has not yet been announced.

Before joining xAI, Liberatore spent nearly ten years in finance roles at Airbnb Inc. (ABNB). His brief stint at xAI marks a sudden shift in a career that had seen steady growth at a major listed company. This latest move leaves a key financial seat empty while xAI pushes ahead with costly growth plans.

Financial Oversight and Growth Plans

With the CFO seat now open, oversight is coming from other leaders tied to Musk’s network. Mahmoud Reza Banki remains Chief Financial Officer at X, the social media firm that Musk folded into xAI earlier this year. In addition, Jared Birchall, who leads Musk’s family office, is also playing a central role in financial decisions.

Meanwhile, xAI is still raising fresh capital to support its expansion. The company is working on new data centers and sourcing advanced chips to scale its artificial intelligence tools. This requires strong financial planning, so the lack of a dedicated CFO could become a point of focus for potential backers. For now, xAI continues to grow while leaning on shared finance leadership. However, the timing of a new CFO hire will matter as the firm seeks more outside capital and develops its infrastructure.

Is Tesla a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Since xAI still retains its private company status, let’s examine Tesla (TSLA), a notable public company led by Musk. On the Street, Tesla currently boasts a Hold consensus rating from Wall Street analysts based on 35 reviews. The average price target stands at $306.42, suggesting a downside of 8.28% from the current price.
