Will AMD Beat Nvidia in the Budget GPU Market?

Story Highlights

AMD is prepared to challenge Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 with its budget-friendly Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12 GB graphics card.

Will AMD Beat Nvidia in the Budget GPU Market?

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is preparing to release the Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12 GB graphics processing unit (GPU), a budget-friendly graphics card to rival Nvidia’s (NVDA) GeForce RTX 5070. AMD has confirmed May 8, 2025 as the release date for the card, ending rumors that it would wait to release the new GPU in Q4 2025.

Preorders for the Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12 GB have already shown up in China, with JD.com (JD) listing the GPU for ¥4,499, which translates to roughly $450 for the new AMD graphics card. That competitive pricing could greatly help AMD capture budget-minded gamers as Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 12 GB has an MSRP of $549.99.

Nvidia Is One Step Ahead of AMD

Unfortunately for AMD, Nvidia already appears ready to introduce its next line of graphics cards. Rumors have spread that Nvidia is testing two new SUPER variants of its RTX 50 Series cards. That includes an RTX 5080 Super and an RTX 5070 SUPER. It’s unclear when these new cards will release, but the RTX 5070 SUPER as a new budget GPU option could take the wind out of AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12 GB sails.

AMD Stock vs. Nvidia Stock

Turning to the TipRanks stock comparison tool, traders can assess investments in AMD and NVDA shares. On the surface, Nvidia appears the better investment with its consensus Strong Buy rating and potential upside of 50.52%. However, AMD is no slouch with a consensus Moderate Buy rating and 44.06% possible upside. AMD also sports a higher Smart Score of 9, compared to NVDA’s 7.

One red flag that investors will note about AMD is its price-to-earning (P/E) ratio. AMD has a 96.34 P/E ratio, while Nvidia’s P/E ratio is lower at 37.78. A higher P/E ratio means AMD stock could be overvalued and may correct to a lower price.
