Analysts also say the creation of a TikTok account shows that U.S. President Donald Trump is unlikely to ban the popular Chinese app in America, as many lawmakers and corporate executives have requested on national security concerns.

The TikTok account, named @whitehouse, was launched on Aug. 19 with video footage of President Trump and a caption that reads: “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” The launch of a TikTok account comes after President Trump repeatedly delayed enforcement of a law requiring the Chinese-controlled short-form video app to be sold or shut down on national security grounds.

Joining the Party

President Trump previously created a personal TikTok account during the 2024 presidential election, and now it appears that his administration is embracing the Chinese app. Concerns have been raised that TikTok and its privately held parent company ByteDance might be used by the Chinese government to spy on American citizens and steal government secrets.

The new White House TikTok account has dashed hopes for a ban, which was seen as providing a boost to Meta Platforms and Google parent company Alphabet (GOOGL), which owns and operates YouTube. TikTok in the U.S. currently has 130.9 million monthly active users, up nearly 10% from 2024 levels.
