That means by that date driverless cars will become more widely useful and common and will perform better than any human, even a Formula One driver.
‘Super Drive’ By 2035
According to an article in the South China Morning Post, WeRide chief executive Tony Han thinks WeRide could reach what is known as “Super Drive” – the level where it surpasses human skills – by around 2035.
It comes at a critical period for the self-driving industry both in China and abroad. In China, the government has halted new licenses for self-driving vehicles after a mass breakdown of Baidu’s (BIDU) Apollo Go robotaxis on public roads in March.
The Chinese government was shocked by the failure and convened a meeting between the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and officials from cities that have robotaxis or self-driving pilots.
It is understood that the government has called for local governments to conduct a full self-review and enhance safety monitoring to prevent similar incidents. The move could put the brakes on a fast-moving industry in China that has been estimated to be worth around $12.2 billion by 2030.
Tesla’s Driving Woes
U.S. rival Tesla is also facing regulatory pressure both in Europe and the U.S. over its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. It was reported by Reuters today that auto watchdogs in the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway have flagged severe issues with the technology. Back home the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has also launched a probe into FSD.
Earlier this year, Gary Black, managing partner at the Future Fund, took to social media site X to state that the Elon Musk-led EV maker had consistently disappointed on its Full Self-Driving promises and that it currently operates only 9 robotaxis without safety monitors.
