Riot Platforms shares fell 13.79% over the past week, with the stock slipping to the mid-teens despite upbeat commentary on its long-term transformation. Options activity shows traders are moderately bearish, as put demand picked up and implied volatility stayed elevated, signaling expectations of larger daily price swings and greater appetite for downside protection. The move comes against a backdrop of crypto market uncertainty and sensitivity to Bitcoin prices, which still drive nearly 90% of Riot’s revenue.

Fundamentally, the latest earnings call highlighted strong operational momentum but also underlined why some investors are cautious. Riot reported record Bitcoin-mining revenue and gross profit, ultra-low power costs, and a growing Bitcoin stash, while aggressively scaling its hash rate. At the same time, the company posted a large GAAP net loss of $663 million in 2025, thin adjusted EBITDA of just $13 million on $647 million of revenue, and sharply higher mining costs per Bitcoin, leaving the business heavily exposed to crypto volatility and dependent on external financing and asset sales to fund its buildout.

The transformation story remains central to the stock’s debate. Riot is pivoting from a pure Bitcoin miner toward a “power dense” data center and infrastructure platform, anchored by major site acquisitions in Texas and a 10-year, $311 million anchor lease with AMD that could scale significantly. While Citi and other analysts maintain bullish ratings and see substantial upside if Riot can lock in more long-term data center contracts, the stock’s slide this week reflects market skepticism over execution risk, funding needs, and the timing of converting its large 1.7 GW power footprint into stable, contracted cash flows.
