MARA Holdings’ share price climbed 13.45% over the past week as investors weighed a bold strategic shift against a series of cautious analyst moves. The company, long known for bitcoin mining, is pivoting toward high‑performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, underpinned by a headline partnership with Starwood Capital Group’s Starwood Digital Ventures. The plan is to convert select mining sites into hyperscale datacenter campuses, starting with around 1 gigawatt of capacity and a possible pipeline up to 2.5 gigawatts, signaling a move into higher‑value, infrastructure‑style revenues.

Despite the stock’s strong weekly performance, Wall Street’s reaction has been mixed. H.C. Wainwright’s Kevin Dede downgraded MARA Holdings to Neutral from Buy and cut 2026 sales forecasts, citing the execution and funding risks of such a capital‑intensive transition and a more cautious outlook on future bitcoin prices. Cantor Fitzgerald also reduced its price target, pointing to a near‑20% quarter‑over‑quarter decline in Q4 mining revenue, negative adjusted EBITDA, and expectations of similar pressure in the next quarter, even as the firm maintained an Overweight rating on the back of the AI‑adjacent growth story.

Balancing those concerns, J.P. Morgan’s Reginald Smith reaffirmed a Buy rating, arguing that MARA Holdings’ owned sites—especially its Granbury, Texas campus—are well placed to support both bitcoin and AI workloads and to shift capacity to whichever offers better economics. He highlighted management’s focus on maximizing returns per megawatt, pursuing recurring lease income, and selectively selling bitcoin to fund datacenter build‑outs as reasons to stay constructive. With the company holding a large bitcoin reserve and layering an AI and HPC strategy on top, traders appear to be betting that MARA Holdings’ transformation could unlock significant long‑term value, even if the path involves meaningful volatility and execution risk.
