Heating Up in Florida
The retail giant has reportedly submitted a request to expand its drone service to Clermont, potentially making the city a central hub for the aerial dispatch of groceries in Central Florida. The request will be considered by Clermont City Council.
Walmart it appears wants to operate drones from its Supercenter in the city with the installation of an 8-foot security fence and a temporary storage container for its drone fleet also part of the plans.
It could be good news for customers with items like fruit and pet food being delivered within 30 minutes within a six-mile radius. If you’re a Walmart Plus member you’ll also get the deliveries for free. It is $19.99 for non-members.
Accelerating Drone Dreams
Walmart appears to be stepping up its drone delivery dreams.
Earlier this week it and Zipline launched its 17th drone delivery service in the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas.
That came only a week after Walmart opened a drone service in Atlanta, flying from six Supercenter locations in the city. It is shipping orders there through a partnership with Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet (GOOGL).
Walmart plans to add drone delivery in five new metro areas and over 100 stores in the U.S. in 2026. The service initially launched in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2023 and is also available in Bentonville, Arkansas.
It has promised that customers in Charlotte, North Carolina, Houston, Texas, Orlando and Tampa are next in line. It hopes this will keep U.S. sales soaring higher – see below:
The drones are another part of Walmart’s technological transformation. This includes its AI shopping assistant Sparky, AI-powered supply chain services and a partnership with ChatGPT group OpenAI. It has also recently debuted on the Nasdaq.
