The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is reportedly using Anthropic’s Mythos preview artificial intelligence (AI) model. This development comes despite earlier restrictions from the Pentagon, which had flagged Anthropic as a national security supply chain risk in March 2026. The move also highlights the growing demand among U.S. agencies to adopt advanced AI tools for intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, and defense operations.

Anthropic launched the preview of the Mythos AI model in early April, describing it as a general-purpose tool that is “strikingly capable at computer security tasks.” The company said the model’s system performs exceptionally well on independent cybersecurity tasks.
Earlier reports indicate that U.S. authorities had restricted or paused cooperation with Anthropic over concerns about military use and AI safeguards during prior contract discussions.
Despite this, the NSA is among roughly 40 organizations granted access to Mythos AI Preview, Axios reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. One source said the model is being utilized more broadly within the agency, although the exact use cases remain unclear.
However, other organizations are reportedly adopting the model to scan systems for vulnerabilities and identify potential security weaknesses. Anthropic, the NSA, and the DoD have not publicly commented on the matter.
Mythos Cybersecurity Capabilities Fuel Debates Across the U.S. and EU
Mythos’ use comes amid broader debate over whether powerful AI tools should be tightly restricted or widely deployed for national security purposes. Anthropic itself warned that Mythos is too powerful to release to the public, citing concerns that it could be misused by bad actors to uncover or exploit security flaws.
At the same time, cybersecurity experts and government users view the system as useful for defense, vulnerability scanning, and threat detection. The policy dispute has also reached the White House and European policymakers.
Last week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei reportedly met with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles on April 17 to discuss how the model should be used. The White House later described the meeting as “productive and constructive,” although U.S. President Donald Trump said he had “no idea” about it when asked by reporters.
The issue is also drawing attention from major U.S. financial institutions, such as JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Goldman Sachs (GS). Outside the U.S., banks are also in close contact with European regulators regarding Anthropic’s Mythos model, according to Christian Sewing, president of the German Banking Association and CEO of Deutsche Bank (DB).
