U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi on Friday at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Both sides said that the meeting was “positive, pragmatic, and constructive,” according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We’re two big, powerful countries, and there are always going to be issues that we disagree on,” Rubio told reporters following the meeting. “I think there’s some areas of potential cooperation and I thought it was a very constructive, positive meeting, and a lot of work to do.”
U.S. and China Seek Meeting Between Trump and Xi
During the meeting, Yi emphasized peaceful coexistence and cooperation between the U.S. and China. Both Yi and Rubio agreed to increase communication and dialogue between the two countries.
When asked about a meeting between Trump and Xi, Rubio said, “there’s a strong desire on both sides to do it.”
