President Trump’s approval rating on immigration dropped to a record low of 39%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from January 23 to January 25. In addition, his overall approval rating fell to 38%, tying a second-term low set in November.

The poll included responses from both before and after the fatal shooting of 37-year-old American citizen Alex Pretti at the hands of a Border Patrol agent. Trump’s immigration approval rating peaked at 50% in February following a campaign promise to curb illegal immigration.

Furthermore, 58% of poll respondents feel that the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have gone “too far,” a view shared by 92% of Democrats but only 20% of Republicans.
Trump appears to be backing down from his aggressive immigration approach, telling Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Monday that he is considering reducing the number of federal agents in the state. In addition, he agreed to withdraw Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino from the area amid public backlash over the shooting.
