Carney will meet with Trump on the day of the 2026 World Cup soccer draw, which the U.S. president plans to attend. The Canadian Prime Minister told media in Ottawa that he had a brief conversation with Trump on Nov. 25 and hopes to meet with him in-person at the start of December.
Carney acknowledged that trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. related to key economic sectors have not yet resumed. The trade talks were suspended in October by Trump after Canada ran an advertisement during the World Series that featured former U.S. President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
Rising Tensions
Carney said the World Cup draw event would give him and Trump an opportunity to meet face-to-face and hopefully smooth over trade tensions between the neighboring countries. The Canadian Prime Minister is under pressure at home to get trade negotiations back on track.
U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods are having a damaging impact on Canada’s economy. Of particular concern are tariffs of as much as 50% placed on Canadian steel and aluminum products. The ongoing tariffs are causing an economic slowdown in Canada and hurting the country’s labor market.
