In a new Truth Social post, President Trump questioned why the U.S. subsidizes Canada for “$200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE military protection, and many other things?” The post comes less than half an hour before the president is scheduled to meet with Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, in the Oval Office.

Trump added that he was looking forward to meeting with Carney despite not needing Canada’s cars, energy, lumber, or “ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain.”
In 2024, Canada exported over 75% of its goods to the U.S. and imported nearly half of its goods from the U.S., according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
Despite the ramifications of the U.S. tariffs, the iShares MSCI Canada ETF (EWC) has returned nearly 6% year-to-date.
