“We’re very, very unhappy with them, and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs, if you don’t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100%, they call them secondary tariffs,” said Trump at the White House on Monday. Trump also said that he is “disappointed” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump to Tariff Russian Export Buyers
50 days from today falls on September 2. Trump had previously warned Russia of secondary tariffs but had not established a deadline.
Trump is likely trying to garner support from Russian energy buyers in order to end the war. A secondary tariff on Russia would affect the countries that purchase Russian exports. Russia is a major global supplier of energy with significant customers like China, India, and the European Union.
