Trump Administration Rethinks Ban on Anthropic after Mythos AI Debut

The Trump administration is signaling a shift in its stance toward Anthropic following the preview of the company’s new Mythos AI model. The change comes after months of tension following the Pentagon’s ban on Anthropic and the company’s designation as a national supply chain risk. In response to the label, Anthropic has filed two lawsuits against the Pentagon and is challenging the decision through legal and regulatory channels, arguing that the designation is unjustified.

Trump Says Anthropic Is “Shaping Up,” Signaling Future Deals

In a recent CNBC interview, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Anthropic’s AI models could still be used in government operations. He said that the AI company was “shaping up,” and indicated that future deals could be in the works.

Trump also noted that discussions had recently taken place at the White House, with talks with the Pentagon still underway. This comes after an earlier move by the administration directing federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology, citing national security concerns and effectively classifying the company as a potential risk at the time.

However, despite that restriction, some government bodies, including the U.S. Department of the Treasury (TREAS) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), had already been quietly testing Anthropic’s Mythos model.

Around the same time, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on April 17 to discuss Mythos AI. Both parties had described the session as “productive,” with the meeting focused on cyber defense and potential collaborations that could provide the government access to the AI model.

Mythos Cyber Capabilities Prompt Anthropic Ban Reconsideration

The review into Anthropic’s national supply risk status is believed to be closely tied to the capabilities of the Mythos AI model. A preview of the model was recently launched, showing its ability to detect software vulnerabilities and help organizations fix critical system flaws before attackers can exploit them.

Because of these advantages, Anthropic opted for a controlled rollout under a new initiative called Project Glasswing. The company invited a select group of partners, including banks like JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Goldman Sachs (GS), as well as cybersecurity firms, to stress-test the system and develop safeguards.

By restricting access and emphasizing defensive use cases, Anthropic has sought to demonstrate that AI can be deployed responsibly. For policymakers, the model’s capabilities also underscore how advanced AI tools are becoming increasingly important to cybersecurity, an area where the Pentagon faces constant and evolving threats.
