U.S. Eyes COFA Deal to Place Troops in Greenland
One solution to acquire Greenland being floated within the administration is the Compact of Free Association (COFA). A COFA agreement would allow the U.S. to station its military on the island as long as it provides essential services to its residents, such as healthcare and economic assistance.
The idea of the U.S. annexing Greenland has drawn heavy pushback from European leaders, who issued a joint statement emphasizing the territory’s sovereignty earlier this week. “Greenland belongs to its people,” read the statement. “It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”
