“The Ultimate Laptop Chip”: Intel Stock (NASDAQ:INTC) Gains as Intel Prepares a Hopeful Winner

We know that chip stock Intel (INTC) is still a major part of the laptop processor market, even if its various competitors have made inroads into that market themselves. But Intel may have a winner to come, as it works on what some reports call “the ultimate laptop chip.” That could be a big win for Intel going forward, and shareholders responded, sending shares up nearly 2% in Friday afternoon’s trading.

200% short exposure to NVDA with NVDS

Reports suggest that Intel will be turning to its partnership efforts with Nvidia (NVDA) to produce a central processing unit (CPU) chip that also gives Intel an edge in the graphics processing unit (GPU) field as well. The result would be an unquestioned powerhouse, and potentially the kind of thing that keeps Intel at the top of the processor heap.

Reports are still early, but the reported Razor Lake-AX chips are said to be just one more step on the road toward getting this chip off the ground. The step after Razor Lake seems to be the big one, dubbed “Titan Lake.” Titan Lake may feature the new “unified core” architecture that we have heard about previously, and open up a field where the Efficiency cores are removed and replaced with a new kind of Performance core. So we will likely have a long while to wait for these to break cover.

Good News for Firefox Users

Meanwhile, Firefox users who are frustrated by the experience on Raptor Lake chips—which reportedly involves Firefox crashing a lot—will be pleased to note that Mozilla released a new patch that should take the issue out of the picture.

The crashes were linked to “…Intel CPU instability,” reports noted, and the fix addressed an issue that had been in the process of investigation for more than a year now. The giveaway was a set of failures found in a zlib-rs compression routine. Dist values were coming back incorrect, reports note, and that ended up producing “index out-of-bounds crashes.” The fix, meanwhile, works around that and gives Firefox some much-needed stability.

Is Intel a Buy, Hold or Sell?

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on INTC stock based on 11 Buys, 24 Holds and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 491.02% rally in its share price over the past year, the average INTC price target of $87.09 per share implies 27.67% downside risk.
