X sues New York over law requiring hate speech data, Bloomberg reports

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter (TWTR), has filed a lawsuit against the state of New York, claiming a law requiring social media companies to disclose how they deal with hate speech and disinformation violates the U.S. Constitution, Bloomberg’s Bob Van Voris reports. The law, which goes into effect this week, requires major social media companies to file reports detailing their moderation practices, and X is seeking an order to declare the provisions void and block the state from enforcing them. X successfully challenged a similar California law last year, with a federal appeals court ruling that it forced companies to provide state-required, non-commercial speech, in violation of the First Amendment. Publicly traded companies in the social media space that compete with X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, include Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL), Pinterest (PINS), Reddit (RDDT) and Snap (SNAP).
