A federal jury in Phoenix has ordered Uber (UBER) to pay $8.5M to a passenger who was raped by a driver, setting the stage for thousands of other similar cases in the country, Emily Steel of The New York Times reports. Uber maintained it is not liable for misconduct of drivers since it classifies them as independent contractors and not employees, but the jury rejected the defense, paving the road for over 3,000 pending sexual assault and sexual misconduct lawsuits.
