President Donald Trump, who expressed confidence while speaking at a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday that he has the authority to oust Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, has for months privately discussed firing Powell, according to The Wall Street Journal’s Brian Schwartz and Nick Timiraos, citing people familiar with the matter. “If I want him out, he’ll be out of there real fast, believe me,” Trump said from the Oval Office, adding that he is “not happy” with Powell, the Journal noted. In meetings at the president’s private Florida club, Trump has spoken with Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor, about potentially firing Powell before his term ends and possibly selecting Warsh to be his replacement, the sources reportedly said. Inside the White House, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has consistently pushed back against Trump advisers who want to replace Powell, the Journal added.
