Oil surged nearly 4% after the U.S. imposed fresh sanctions on Russia’s top oil companies, creating a shockwave across energy markets and raising inflation concerns.
Concurrently, the dollar firmed against major currencies ahead of a delayed U.S. consumer-price report, while the yen weakened to a one-week low amid expectations of Japanese stimulus.
The broader backdrop remains complicated. The U.S. government shutdown has entered its 23rd day, blocking key economic data and depriving the market of clear signals on jobs, inflation and growth.
