Morning Movers: ASML slips following first quarter results

The major indices look poised to opened lower, primarily driven by escalating trade tensions and new export restrictions.​ This follows the U.S. government’s decision to tighten export controls on advanced AI-related computer chips.​ The recent U.S. actions have intensified concerns over a potential trade war. President Donald Trump has announced a new investigation into critical mineral imports and imposed steep tariffs on Chinese imports. In retaliation, China has increased duties on U.S. goods, further straining international trade relations. ​International markets have mirrored these concerns. European indices, such as Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40, have recorded losses, while Asian markets have also suffered, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng sliding 1.9% and Japan’s Nikkei down 1% .​

In response to the heightened market volatility, investors are seeking refuge in traditional safe-haven assets. Gold prices have surged above $3,300 per ounce for the first time, reflecting increased demand amid economic uncertainty. Oil prices have also risen slightly, while the U.S. dollar has steadied after recent declines.​

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak on the economic outlook, which may provide further insights into the central bank’s policy direction amid the current market turbulence .​

In pre-market trading, S&P 500 futures fell 0.9%, Nasdaq futures fell 1.6% and Dow futures fell 0.2%.
