Meta’s AI hires disrupt company with swift exits, threats to leave, FT says

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shifted leadership of the company’s departments from longtime acolytes to new and recently-hired executives, but this transition has brought new organizational turbulence at the company, Hannah Murphy, Cristina Criddle and George Hammond of The Financial Times reports. Within days of joining Meta, co-creator of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Shengjia Zhao threatened to quit, even signing the employment paperwork to return to OpenAI. Shortly after, Zhao was named Meta’s new ‘chief AI scientist,’ four people familiar with the matter said. Additionally, several new AI staff have decided to leave after brief tenures, including machine learning scientist Ethan Knight, former OpenAI researcher Avi Verma, and research scientist Rishabh Agarwal, people familiar with the matter added. Meta has also recently seen the departure of generative AI staffers Chaya Nayak ad Loredana Crisan, who had worked for the company for nine and ten years, respectively.
