Meta to lay off roughly 10% of Reality Labs staff, NY Times reports

Meta intends to lay off roughly 10% of the staff in its Reality Labs unit who work on products such as the metaverse as the Facebook parents shifts priorities to build next-generation AI, the New York Times’ Mike Isaac and Eli Tan report, citing three people with knowledge of the situation. The cuts to the division, which has roughly 15,000 workers, could be announced as soon as Tuesday, the authors say. While the layoffs would represent a fraction of the company’s total workforce, they are set to disproportionately impact those in the metaverse unit who work on VR headsets and a VR-based social network, the authors note.
